The connection between pornography and sex trafficking.
Sex trafficking is defined by the use of force, fraud, or coercion to obtain some type of labor or commercial sex act.
According to cases reported to the National Human Trafficking Hotline in 2020, pornography moved to the number one venue of where trafficking cases were reported within the United States.
A trafficker can make money by selling videos of their victims to porn sites and porn sites make money by selling the videos to consumers. The more violent the video, the more money can be made from it. For instance, a popular website getting millions of views as recently as January 2020 was taken down because of proven sex trafficking claims. GirlsDoPorn tricked young women into thinking that they were getting involved in a modeling video and physically forced their victims to record a pornographic video with them before letting them go. This pattern continued for eleven years before a total of $12.8 million was ordered to be paid back to traumatized victims. Some of the models had become suicidal, however, for no amount of money will undo the life-changing rape and shame from the video of them being posted on the internet
A New York Times Article depicted the horrors of a girl having to relive her sex trafficking experience on PornHub over and over–at age of 15 years old. PornHub was profiting off the advertisements playing before the rape of a child, and this wasn’t the only case of “verified” users posting nonconsensual videos or content with underage children.
Did you know that the top 3 porn sites in the world receive a combined 134,491 new website visits per minute and that most pornographic videos contain some depiction of aggression and violence? Did you also know that most young people are exposed to pornography by the time they are 11-13 years of age and that research has shown pornography consumption is frequent? In fact, one study that assessed porn consumption rates of 18 to 73 year olds found that 91.5% of the men and 60.2% of the women who they surveyed reported having consumed pornography in the past month that the study was conducted (Solano, Eaton, O’Leary, 2020) .
The pornography industry is a $97 billion industry worldwide, with child pornography taking in at least $3 billion
89% of pornography comes from the U.S.
What is the link between pornography and human trafficking? There are two links. The Freedom Youth Project Foundation, (www. freedomyouthproject.org) reports that thousands of trafficked children and young adults are forced to make pornographic films. The second is that those addicted to pornography eventually lose satisfaction with just watching sexual encounters and seek encounters with trafficked persons. An estimated 40% to 80% of consumers of child pornography abuse and molest a child (www. CitizenLink.com).
